These hunts take place near our home and ranch in the famous Gila National Forest. This is home to some of the biggest bulls in the west! Tags can be obtained by either the NM draw or purchasing a landowner tag. You will be hunting big, rough country primarily by foot and will require good physical conditioning to have a successful hunt. We offer muzzleloader, bow and rifle hunts. We have an extremely high success rate around 85% and run nearly 100% on shot opportunity with a great chance at 300+ class bulls . Elk hunts will be conducted in units 34 and 36 in southeastern New Mexico which are listed by the state as quality hunt units. Season dates vary with weapon choice of archery, rifle or muzzleloader. These are draw hunts unless you purchase a unitwide landowner or ranch only tag, . Draw success rates vary by season and unit, but the odds are increased due to allocation of tags to outfitters applying hunters in the outfitter pool. Unit-wide private landowner authorizations and ranch only tags may be purchased if unsuccessful in the draw subject to availability. The hunt cost will be increased by the amount paid to the land owner but you won’t be dependent on the draw. These are 5 day hunts, except archery which is typically 6 days. Hunts can be priced for 2 hunters to 1 guide or 1 hunter per guide . I highly recommend the 1-1 option to give the best chance for success. If you choose the 2-1 option you will need to have your own hunting partner so we don't have to mix parties. New Mexico also offers a youth either-sex rifle hunt that gives the hunter a chance to hunt during the rut with a rifle and a mobility-impaired hunt in unit 34 that provides a very good opportunity to harvest an animal.

New Mexico Archery Elk Hunts will give you the experience of hunting water holes to stalking. If you want to stalk elk in the the mornings and then sit over a water hole in the evening. Here in the Gila National Forest some of the biggest bulls have been killed over water holes. There's nothing like a bull screaming and closing the distance for a shot. New Mexico Rifle Elk Hunts and New Mexico Muzzleloader Elk Hunts are what I call reach out and touch them hunts. The bulls are still bugling and you can shoot a bull from 50 to 500 yards. Grouse Mesa Outfitters specializes in horseback elk hunting. We operate on private land near Chama located in northern New Mexico's pristine mountains. The property, a 7,000 acre cattle ranch, and the surrounding area host a large population of elk. Currently, the statewide price for a private land bull elk tag is anywhere from 6 to 10 thousand dollars. We will sell our rifle bull tags at the low end of that spectrum. Our services will provide a quality hunt in a wilderness atmosphere using horses while enjoying the comforts of a cabin. We will pick our clients up at a meeting point and transport them to the cabin for a 5 consecutive day hunt, with 6 nights lodging and meals provided. Each hunt will be guided with 1 guide for every 2 hunters. We will transport the hunters’ game back to the cabin via horses and store it in a clean and safe spot for the duration of the hunt. At the end of the hunt we will transport the hunters and their game back to the meeting spot. The cabin, base camp, is a large spacious building with a western style bunkroom that holds up to 12 persons. There is also a smaller private room available. We have a very capable cook who prepares only the best of meals. Grouse Mesa Outfitters is for any person looking to experience a quality, highly successful elk hunt on horseback in the western mountains without the high volume of competition on public land. We have 2 archery seasons in September and 4 rifle seasons in October. The number of elk tags is limited so the sooner you book your hunt the better.
